Auroras are the result of the emissions of photons in the Earth's upper atmosphere, above 80 km (50 miles), from ionized nitrogen atoms regaining an electron, and oxygen and nitrogen atoms returning from an excited state to ground state. They are ionized or excited by the collision of solar wind particles being funneled down and accelerated along the Earth's magnetic field lines; excitation energy is lost by the emission of a photon of light, or by collision with another atom or molecule:

IMG_3763.JPG   The Blue Lagoon (Icelandic: "Bláa lóniđ") geothermal spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland. The warm waters are rich in minerals like silica (the white stuff on our faces) and sulfur and bathing in the Blue Lagoon is reputed to help some people suffering from skin diseases such as psoriasis.   ICELAND  (12)
IMG_3783.JPG   The lagoon is fed by the water output of the nearby geothermal power plant Svartsengi. Superheated water is vented from the ground near a lava flow and used to run turbines that generate electricity. After going through the turbines, the steam and hot water passes through a heat exchanger to provide heat for a municipal hot water heating system. Then the water is fed into the lagoon for recreational and medicinal users to bathe in.  ICELAND  (11)

Ţingvellir National Park was founded in 1930 to protect the remains of the parliament site and was later expanded to protect natural phenomena in the surrounding area. Ţingvellir National Park was the first national park in Iceland and was decreed "a protected national shrine for all Icelanders, the perpetual property of the Icelandic nation under the preservation of parliament, never to be sold or mortgaged."  ICELAND  (9)

Baltic Trip: Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania
The 2 weeks trip started in Gothenburg for a weekend and from there a train to Stockholm (Sweden) for a couple of days, then an overnight ferry to Helsinki (Finland) for another weekend. From there took the ferry to Tallin (Estonia), stayed for a day and next to Riga (Latvia) by bus. After a day another bus to Vilnius (Lithuania) where I stayed for 2 days. Following, catched the last bus of the trip to Liepaja (Latvia) from where 2 days later got the airplane back to the UK...Obviously, many interesting things happened in between and on those places; too long to explain, just check the pics!
